Complexity theory and learning: Less radical than it seems?

چکیده

In a spirit of collegial support, this paper argues that Beckett and Hager’s theoretical justification empirical exemplifications do not full justice to the complexity group or team learning. We firstly reaffirm our support for argument Becket Hager make, though expressing some reservations about Complexity Theory, explain taken-for-granted assumptions learning by an individual is paradigm case context plays minimal role in process. Drawing on joint separate work, we demonstrate less radical than it may initially seem because predicated on: (i) cognitive-bounded rather “distributed” “extended” conception mind; (ii) material “immaterial” activity; (iii) co-present “fractional” “connective” ontology. Despite making critique, conclude are adding further substance overarching and, doing so, encouraging them be more how they conceptualise

"Elevator Music": More Than It Seems

"The musically aware hostess no longer allows the butler, or her husband, to sling records on to the turntable in a haphazard way. She no longer risks the dangers of the soup being spilled by Haydn's 'Surprise' Symphony, or Mrs. Alias-Jones choking over the fish because an ill-timed bit of jazz trumpet has frightened her. She now supplies a ready-made background of elegant and suitable music to...

Statistical Learning Control of Uncertain Systems: It Is Better than It Seems

Recently, probabilistic methods and statistical learning theory have been shown to provide approximate solutions to \diÆcult" control problems. Unfortunately, the number of samples required in order to guarantee stringent performance levels may be prohibitively large. This paper introduces bootstrap learning methods and the concept of stopping times to drastically reduce the bound on the number...

Using Critiquing for Improving Medical Protocols: Harder than It Seems

Medical protocols are widely recognised to provide clinicians with high-quality and up-to-date recommendations. A critical condition for this is of course that the protocols themselves are of high quality. In this paper we investigate the use of critiquing for improving the quality of medical protocols. We constructed a detailed formal model of the jaundice protocol of the American Association ...

Chaos/Complexity Theory and Education

Sciences exist to demonstrate the fundamental order underlying nature. Chaos/complexity theory is a novel and amazing field of scientific inquiry. Notions of our everyday experiences are somehow in connection to the laws of nature through chaos/complexity theory’s concerns with the relationships between simplicity and complexity, between orderliness and randomness (Retrieved from http://www.inc...

Treatment-associated morbidity and oncological outcome were evaluated. PATIENTS AND METHODS From December 2000 to September 2007, 60 patients ...
